	Based in Chicago, Rafael Barontini is a creative enthusiast. He is a designer working across a variety of mediums in a playful manner, experimenting with color, typography, collage, and visual semiotics. 
To develop meaningful experiences for clients, organizations, and institutions his work applies thoughtful systemic thinking by creating engaging visual solutions across multiple platforms. He has participated on projects for clients such as Adobe, Google, Glassdoor, Youtube, VMware, and Pinterest. He has been recognized by AIGA design awards, Interior Design awards, and SEGD design awards.

Rafael has studied art and design at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he received his master's degree in graphic design. There, he absorbed the acute attention to form-making associated with art and design. He focused on the intersection between communication and interpretation. This helped to refine his own visual and conceptual approach—where design doesn’t live in a vacuum and is best imagined when a community is involved.

	Pacific Shores
	A sweeping landscape composed of wetlands, hillsides, and salt ponds, skirt a cluster of 11 mid-rise buildings situated adjacent to the Port of Redwood City. The Pacific Shores Center—once an industrial hub for timber milling and ship construction, is now a business center that’s home to a range of tech companies.Media Objectives oversaw the art direction, wayfinding, and custom designs, so we decided to serve as curators, reaching out to Global Experience Design (a local artist group), Thinkwell (a production agency), Iontank (an interactive studio), Antlre Creative (a custom artist), Framer’s Workshop for custom framing, and Muse for custom designs. All in all totalling over 1,000 colorful pieces of art commissioned by local designers and Bay Area artists filling the space.By embracing the building’s existing structure and celebrating its unique location, Pacific Shores aimed at fostering a vibrant and creative atmosphere, all the while conveying a sense of comfort to enhance employee wellness and productivity.

	Ford Calumet Environmental Center at Big Marsh
	The Calumet Region in Chicago’s Southeast Side once had a collection of thriving wetlands, migratory animals, and diverse native vegetation until the turn of the 20th century when industry boomed. Toxins and slag, a by-product of extracting precious metals from ore, became a part of the Big Marsh landscape. This continued until the 1970s, when community leaders and environmental activists successfully pushed for regulated industrial practices. Now, restorative efforts have aimed to set Big Marsh on a new course where industry, nature and culture can safely coexist and continue the legacy of the people who made that possible.
Big Marsh Park is home to a 45-acre bike park and a series of walking trails that provide eco-recreation opportunities in Chicago’s Southeast Side. At the park’s entrance a 9,300 square-foot facility named the Ford Calumet Environmental Center (FCEC) serves as both a gateway and a hub—featuring a permanent exhibit and classrooms. Media Objectives studio has partnered with various stakeholders on an exhibition space that aims to embody the historical importance of Big Marsh.
The main exhibition at the entrance houses modular, mobile steel frame structures that educate visitors about the site’s past and key characters that played a role in the development of the Calumet Region. Made of wood, steel, and acrylic panels, the exhibit’s materials are also reflective of the site’s industrial history and environmentally-responsive future. The series of mobile structures can be dismantled and stowed away, or moved toward the walls to clear the center of the exhibit for community gatherings and other activities. Each frame showcases exhibit content, from mounted graphic panels to physical objects—each explaining the history of the region through eight, highlighted time periods. Additionally, taxidermy of the animals native to the Calumet region are displayed in acrylic casings within the steel frames. A fox, huron, beavers, and various bird species show visitors the natural beauty that surrounds them in what used to be a struggling ecosystem.
A permanent display on the marsh ecosystem includes a series of 2D maps on the region and booklets that explain points of interest, highlight activities and hiking trails. A mobile 3D map provides a visual representation of the park in its entirety and its special moments. On the opposite wall of the main room, the permanent exhibit features taxidermied avian species of the region in acrylic cases, with imprinted descriptions of each bird. Wrapping the walls of the facility, nature graphics of animals, grasses, and other scenery play with the sense of scale and serve as an extension of the exhibit throughout the space.

MAS Context is a quarterly journal produced in Chicago that addresses issues that affect the urban context. Each issue delivers a comprehensive and critical view of a single topic through the active participation of people from different fields and different perspectives who, together, instigate the debate over urban issues that affect the way we live and design.MAS Context shares remarkable design ideas and work with the public. It embraces collaboration, explores new formats of distribution, and thinks critically about the issues that affect how we live. Most importantly though, it works to generate a collaborative culture of design.
The Bold issue features eighteen projects that explore new possibilities for the city of Chicago. Generated by both emerging and established Chicago-based architects and designers, these projects rethink the future of the city. Ultimately, while these projects focus on the city of Chicago, the ideas behind their architectural and urban strategies can open up new areas of exploration. The projects featured in the issue were part of the exhibition BOLD: Alternative Scenarios for Chicago curated by Iker Gil and included in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial.

	Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo
	Prominently located adjacent to the Grand Avenue entrance of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus, the complex consists of seven three-to five-story residence hall buildings for up to 1,475 students, as well as an adjacent four-level parking structure. 
Views opening to the ring of the Seven Sisters, the hilltops that wrap the campus, give students a deep sense of rootedness in the local landscape. The university partnered with the local Northern Chumash tribe, yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini, to provide direction for creating environmental graphics for each of the residence halls. These graphics tell the stories of the landscape of seven Northern Chumash villages along the Central Coast, including flora and fauna. Each residence hall draws its name from a tribal village: elewexe, nipumuʔ, tiłhini, tsɨtqawɨ, tšɨłkukunɨtš, tsɨtpxatu, and tsɨtkawayu. 
The large graphics painted on the concrete walls tell each building’s main landscape story as well as individual substories that add depth. Within each building, every floor has its own wall art reflecting elements of the main story (ground floor) and substories (upper floors). The wall art, which was approved by the tribal team, was applied with stencils and hand-painting. The goal was to increase students’ respect for the land and its ecosystems, for each other, and for the cultural heritage of the place they live.
